Three Filter Types, Different Problems

Cartridge, DE and sand filters clean water in different ways and fail differently. High pressure, low flow, cloudy water, debris returning to the pool or material appearing at the returns can help narrow the cause.

The pressure immediately after a proper cleaning provides a useful baseline. A rising reading can indicate loading or restricted flow, while an unmoving gauge may simply be defective.

Cartridge Filters

Elements can become loaded with oils and fine debris, tear, collapse or separate from their end caps. Tanks, manifolds, air-relief assemblies and gauges may also require service.

DE Filters

Torn grids, damaged manifolds and incorrect reassembly can allow DE powder to return to the pool. The filter must be cleaned and recharged according to its design and capacity.

Sand Filters

Older sand beds can channel or calcify, while damaged laterals or standpipes may return sand to the pool. Multiport valves and tank components are additional possible failure points.

Repair or Replacement

Tank condition, age, parts availability, recurring leaks and filter capacity all influence whether repair remains practical.
