Diatomaceous Earth filters, used in 90% of our residential homes, utilize this valve to reverse the water flow through the grids, ejecting the dirt and debris. When is backwashing necessary? A clean filter typically lasts 3-6 months before needing to be cleaned - depending upon environmental factors. The best time to backwash is when the pressure gauge reads about 8 pounds higher than clean pressure. Once accomplished, the needle will drop a few pounds and the flow is restored for another week.
