Inside the cell body are titanium blades that are oppositely charged and exchange a small current to transform sodium hypochlorite (salt) into hypochlorous acid (chlorine). In this process there develops over time a buildiup of salts on the blades that need periodic cleaning with a high pressure hose and acid solution. In Santa Monica, salt pool systems require periodic maintenance such as this, and our technicians regularly schedule cleanings during the annual service season. We recommend an inspection/cleaning every 3-4 months as not all cells build up crystalline at the same rate depending on the hardness of the water and other factors.
